General Chaos. 1993. Game Refuge, Inc. Electronic Arts. Sega Genesis.
We want to show you guys some of the games that we glossed over or may have missed when we were growing up and we kind of had to stop because we found a game that's pretty awesome.
We put together a video above that you can watch or you read more here.
It’s called General Chaos developed by Game Refuge Inc. and published by Electronic Arts in 1993 and we're playing on the Second Genesis.
It's too much fun.
General Chaos is a delightful, dirty and quick battle game between 2 generals – ‘General Havoc’ and ‘General Chaos’ as they battle it out to take over the capital city of their sworn enemy.
It is slightly longer if you play it in campaign mode since that requires a number of battles to be fought in a strategic and dynamic map.
We had to review this game just so that way everyone else can enjoy the mania and the insanity that this classic retro game provides.
Do you know what it reminds us of? It reminds us of Worms kind of. It has that same feel.
It's got that same ridiculousness to it, but it's a totally different game.
We started with head to head because of... reasons.
It’s just way more entertaining that way.
General Chaos plans his attack from his home base in "Moronica."
The game starts by taking you through the setup menu, showing you what's happening and where.
You get to pick a squad of different types of characters and it looks like we've got pre-built squads.
Among your options are:
Gunner – Their weapons of choice are powerful machine guns. While these guns tend to jam at times, they are well-rounded attack units that can unleash medium-range attacks along with a high firing rate on the enemy.
Launcher – Their weapon is a massive rocket launcher. Although there’s no ‘sniper’ weapon in the game, Launchers fulfill this role, thanks to their long-range, slow-firing, and incredibly powerful weapons. Although enemies can take cover to protect themselves from launchers, opposing combatants may suffer instant deaths randomly when they are shot at by launchers. (They can’t even call medics since they get reduced to mere skeletons). They can wipe out bonus targets as well.
Chucker – These guys ‘chuck’ grenades. While they have a low firing rate and can be avoided easily, grenades have a great range and can damage many units simultaneously if they penetrate the enemy’s cover. They can wipe out bonus targets too.
Scorcher – They are the most powerful units you’ll find in this game. These units utilize flamethrowers for damaging their opponents. Although their range is the shortest among all the units, they have the quickest weapons and can eliminate multiple soldiers. When Scorchers get near other units, there’s almost zero chance of them surviving the attack. As a result, they are excellent escort and flanking units. When scorchers go underwater, their weapons get temporarily disabled (They shoot water bubbles instead of fiery flames) Opposing combatants may suffer instant deaths randomly when they are attacked by scorchers.
And finally...
Blaster: They are usually considered to be the weakest units in this game and require protection. They are similar to Chuckers in almost every aspect. However, they throw dynamite sticks, which can enter the enemy’s location to inflict heavy damage. But their firing rate is extremely low and has the shortest range, next to Scorchers, thus reducing their advantages. Opposing combatants may suffer instant deaths randomly when they are attacked by scorchers. They can wipe out bonus targets too.
We haven't dug deep enough into it yet to see if there's a way to customize your teams, but for now, we're just going to go with it, because it kind of doesn't matter.
Ryan’s preferred team is “Brute Force,” besides sounding awesome there's a guy with a flamethrower.
So, how do you argue with a flamethrower?
Usually by going “Ahhhhhh” and running away!
We're going to take a second and kind of explain how the gameplay works.
There’s a blinking cursor that tells you which character you're currently commanding.
The blue arrow tells you where you're putting them.
You move your troops one by one.
You can also press another button, the C button on your Genesis Control or if you're using the Super Nintendo style controls then it's the A button to switch characters.
And then once you have them all laid out, you can press or as you get closer, you can press the A button. (Which is the Y button if you’re on the SNES controller.)
This commands everybody to fire their weapons at the closest bad guy.
If you check out the video you can watch how Ryan grills Brandon like a hot dog on the Fourth of July using flamethrowers and rocket launchers.
Once the dust cloud settles, you can watch us duke it out in close combat that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
When in close combat, don't forget to block!
It’s awesome how everything stops as two guys just slug it out as everything around them is on fire because General Havoc commands it.
We love it.
Overall we’re pretty impressed by the game.
We tried a little bit of subterfuge in the last round and that didn't work out so well, so we’ll try and play it a little differently next time.
Even though you could just mash all of the buttons and win, there’s way more strategy than that.
Oh yeah, strategy! Punch, kick and block. Blow stuff up!
As you all will see in the video Brandon is the self-proclaimed ultimate champion of the world.
If anybody wants to challenge us and fly out to California and take a go, Brandon claims he’ll absolutely smash you at this game, in the meantime, check out General Chaos.
We've had a blast playing it.
